Ensure medical evacuation cover is ≥USD 100,000 (≥USD 250,000 for adventure activities).

A China travel insurance premium is driven by four inputs: trip cost, days abroad, traveller age and coverage tier. Whatever tier you pick for China, confirm medical evacuation home is included at USD 100,000 or more — that single clause matters more than the premium. With Beijing near sea level, standard medical cover applies — no altitude riders needed for a city-focused China itinerary.
What China Coverage Costs by Tier
| Tier | 1 week | 2 weeks | 4 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $84.64 | $169.28 | $338.56 |
| Standard | $126.96 | $253.92 | $507.84 |
| Premium | $169.28 | $338.56 | $677.12 |
Rates scale with China's cost-of-living index (55, US = 100), trip cost, duration and traveller age — run the calculator above for your exact inputs.

Tier choice is a limits decision for China: the three bands cost within a few dollars of each other per week but insure very different worst cases. A 35-year-old on a US$2,000 week in China pays about $126.96 at Standard tier, $84.64 at Basic and $169.28 at Premium.
Duration scales roughly linearly for China: double the days, double the premium, which is why a month costs near four times the week. Cancel-for-any-reason upgrades typically add 40–50% to the China premium — worth it only for large non-refundable bookings.
What China Trips Actually Require
| Tier | Medical | Cancellation | Baggage | Rate (% of trip cost) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | USD 50,000 | USD 5,000–10,000 | USD 500–1,000 | ~4% |
| Standard | USD 100,000+ | USD 10,000–25,000 | USD 1,500–2,500 | ~6% |
| Premium | USD 250,000+ | USD 25,000+ | USD 3,000+ | ~8% |
Limits are market-standard bands for China trips; individual insurers cap evacuation at USD 100,000–500,000 by tier.

Insurers price China as a mid-band destination (cost index 55), but the medical limits you carry should assume the worst private clinic in Beijing. Evacuation riders for China cost little relative to the air-ambulance invoices they pre-approve — read the assistance-guarantee clause carefully.
China riders are also the place to cover rental-sports equipment and cruise-connection misses — cheap add-ons for specific itineraries. Delay benefits on China policies usually trigger at 6–12 hours and pay a fixed amount — enough for a hotel night, not for the missed tour.
What China Policies Typically Exclude
Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded on China policies unless waived; the waiver must usually be bought within two weeks of the first trip payment. Alcohol- and drug-related incidents are excluded outright on China policies — no tier overrides that line. Extreme sports — trekking above 3,000 m, scuba beyond recreational limits, off-piste skiing, bungee, paragliding — need riders for a China trip.
China claims tied to events publicised before your booking date are denied as foreseeable; timing of purchase is part of the contract. Expect China policies to skip routine dental, vision and maternity claims — the exclusions page is the real contract, more than the headline limits.
Buying and Claiming for a China Trip
Buy the China policy the day you pay the first non-refundable deposit — that date unlocks the full cancellation clock and any pre-existing waiver. Two China policies at similar prices can differ by a factor of three on the deductible — read the excess table before choosing.
Claims for China live or die on paperwork: police reports for theft, incident reports from the operator, and itemised medical invoices in English where possible. Annual multi-trip policies beat single-trip China cover once you cross two insured trips a year; price both shapes for your actual travel pattern.
