Two fee lines dominate a Ethiopian Airlines excess bill: $55 for each additional checked bag and $10 per kilogram above 23 kg. The overweight-vs-second-bag decision is arithmetic: at $10/kg and $55 per extra bag, the crossover on Ethiopian Airlines usually sits 3–6 kg over the 23 kg limit, depending on what the second bag already weighs.
The cheapest fixes are free on Ethiopian Airlines too: distribute weight across bags, wear the heavy coat, pocket the chargers. Pre-booking Ethiopian Airlines extra bags online locks the lowest rate.
Flying with Sports Gear on Ethiopian Airlines
Sports gear on Ethiopian Airlines (ET) travels as standard checked baggage within the weight allowance at no extra cost. Musical instruments on Ethiopian Airlines: small instruments (violin, flute) can travel as carry-on if they fit the sizer; larger ones (cello, guitar) usually require a separate seat or checked handling in a hard case.
Pack fragile and valuable items carefully — Ethiopian Airlines's liability for damage to improperly packed special items is limited, and hard-shell cases settle most disputes before they start.
